Group 1 of the D examination, which qualifies pupil teachers or probationers to enter the Normal Training College, proved a stumbling-block at the lust examination to 25 young teachers in the Canterbury Education Board's flistrict. The mattei came up at a meeting of the board to-day. when a letter was read from Mr Caughley, Director of Education, expressing surprise that there should have been .25 applications for a year’s extension of service as jlupil teachers or probationers. Mr CaUghley added": “It is desired to impress upon all pupil teachers, probationers, and head teachers supervising same. that, there is rarely any excuse for a pupil teacher or pro bationer not passing in croup 1 of class D examination, which would qualify for entering the Training College. Failure to qualify under the very moderate conditions required must as a rule indicate that the young teacher has not been sufficiently diligent in his or her study. Further, tills fact should be apparent to the head teacher long before the end of two years’ service, and should be reported to tho board, so that those who are not making satisfactory progress should be warned or dismissed. With tho large number of well-qualified young people now applying for entrance to the teaching profession, with the ample facilities which they have had for free secondary education,-and with tho payment of allowances by the Government, amounting to fully double those in any other part of the Empire, it is only reasonable to ask that these young people should apply themselves seriously and diligently to their studies, and (hat very rarely should any concession be required. It is noted that application has been made for 25 extonsions this rear. In the opinion of tho department there should not as a rule be the necessity for more than four or five such applications." It was decided to forwdyd copies of Mr Caugbley’s letter to all head teachers in the board’s district.
