UNIVERSITY SENATE

(FIRST DAY’S PROCEEDINGS. The Senate of the University of New Zealand commenced its annual meeting in tho Allen Hall yesterday morning; present—tho Chancellor (Sir Robert Stout), the vice-chancellor (Professor J. Macmillan Brown, Christchurch), Mr J. Caughley (Director of Education), Professor Sogar, Professor Dettmann, Professor Thomas, Hon. G. Fowldu, and Mr J. W. Tibbs (Auckland), Dr Anderson, Professor J. R. Brown. Professor T. Hunter, Hon. Dr Collins, Mr F. A. de la Mare, and Mr F. H. Bake well (Wellington), Professor Scott, Professor Wall, Professor Ilight, and Mr J. C. Adams (Christchurch), Hon. J. A. Ilanan (Invercargill), Rev. Dr Cameron, Dr H. Lindo Ferguson, Professor Beuham, Dr G. E. Thompson, and Mr W. J. Morrell (Dunedin). APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES. Professor Macmillan Brown moved that a Business Committee, consisting of Dr Cameron. Professor Hunter, fcjegar, J. R. Brown, and the mover, be set up to bring forward the constitution of the committees so that the work of the Senate might be attacked at once. Tho Senate tlien adjourned for this purpose. When tho Senate resumed the following committees wore sot up dn tho motion ot ttio Vice-Chancellor: — Finance, J-uw, and Music.—Hon. Dr Collins (convenor), Mr Adams, Mr do la Mare, Professor Dettmann, and the Hon. J. A. Hanan. December Examiners.—Tho Vice-chancel-lor (convenor). Dr Anderson, Mr Caughley, Hon. J. A. Hanan, and Professor Wall. Science, Agriculture, and Forestry.—Professor Thomas (convener). Mr Adams, Dr Anderson, Professor Benhtun, Hon. G. Fowlds, Professor Scott, Professor Segar, and Mr Tibbs. Medical, Dental, and Homo Science.— Dr Lindo Ferguson (convenor). Mr Bakewell. Professor Beuham, Dr Cameron, ur Collins, Hon. G. Fowlds, and Professor Thomas. Statutes and Ad Eundem.—Professor Hunter (convener)' and Professor J. Rankine Brown. Entrance Examinations.—Professor Ilight (convener), Mr Bakewell, Mr Caughley, Dr Lindo Ferguson. Mr Morrell, Dr G. Mr Morrell, Professor Segar, Dr Thompson, Professor Wall. The chancellor and vice-chancellor are ex officio members of all committees. On the motion "of the Vice-Chancellor an Obituary Committee was appointed to draw up letters of condolence to the relatives of those mentioned in the chancellor’s address as having died during the year. The committee consists of the chancellor, the vicechancellor, and Dr Cameron. The appointment of an Engineering Committee was loft in tho hands of the Business Committee. INVITATIONS. 'Hie Vice-chancellor reported that ha had received two invitations from England. One was from the vice-chancellor and the syndics for local examinations and lectures at Cambridge University who invited representatives of the New Zealand University to attend a conference on extra-mural university teaching, to bo hold at Cambridge from July 6 to 10. The chancellor (the Earl of Balfour) would preside at the first meeting. Tho other invitation was a request that a delegate should be appointed by tho New Zealand University to attend the celebration of tho 800th anniversary of the foundation of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and tho Priory Church of St. Bartholomew in London. ProfosSpr Macmillan Brown suggested that Sir Ernest Rutherford should represent them’ at the Cambridge Conference. In regard 1 to the (Other invitation ho had in mind the name of a suitable delegate, but ho ■was awaiting notification of acceptance. The Senate was not asked to pass any resolution in concoction with either matter. APPOINTMENT OF EXAMINERS. Tho following examiners wore appointed for this year : Macmillan Brown Prize.—Professors Wall and Hunter and Mr Tibbs. This prize, which is to consist of books of a value of not more than £lO, is awarded every alternate year for the best imaginative cornposition either in prose or verso at tho option of tho competitors. Haydon Prize.—The Chancellor. ViceChancellor, and the Hon. J. A. Hanan. The Haden’s Prize.—As no entries wore received for this prize no examiners were appointed. Atkinson Prize.—Professor Flight, Messrs J. O. Adams end W. J. Morrell. The Chancellor mentioned that there were no entries for tho Haydon prize, which is awarded for the best essay connected with or bearing reference to the maintenance of «ea power by Britain from, an Imperial point of view. HONOURS IN EDUCATION. "A recommendation, of which tho Board of Studies had approved, that candidates for honours in education who normally would have to sit in 1922 should bo allowed to sit in 1923, was adopted on the motion of Professor/ J. R. Brown. The mover explained that owing to the diffiodlty of procuring the necessary books ond obtaining proper university tuition in the case of a newly-created honours subject the students should be given an exti-a year. CANTERBURY COLLEGE JUBILEE. Dr Cameron moved that the Chancellor and the Vice-Chancellor be appointed te represent the senate at the jubilee celebrations of Canterbury College in May. The motion was carried. Mr Morrell was asked to draw up a congratulatory address on behalf of the senate. Dr Lindo Ferguson jocularly suggested that there should bo a prize for tho best congratulatory address.—(Laughter.) NOTICES OF MOTION. Th Hon. G. Fowlds gave notice to move: (1) ‘‘That tho senate grant the request of tho Auckland University College that tho Engineering Department of the Auckland School of Alines be recognised as a school for the training of students for tho degree of Bachelor of Civil Engineering, and that students of the school bo also permitted to sit for the first and second professional examinations for tho degrees of Bachelor of Engineering (mechanical) and Bachelor of Engineering (electrical).’’ (2) ‘That the Entrance Examination Committee be requested to consider and report on the advisability of including bookkeeping and business organisation in the optional subjects for tho matriculation examination.” Tho Hon. J. A. Hanan gave the following notice of motion: "That the Education Department be asked to obtain and eubmit to tho senate at its next meeting « revolt relative to the position of science in secondary schools.” Mr Bakewell gave notice to move: “That the necessary stops be taken to enable tho senate to confer honorary degrees.” POWERS OF BOARD OF STUDIES. Dr ’Anderson called attention to a clause in thfej report of the Board of Studies m which The following motion was reported to have been unanimously passed by tho board: “That in tho opinion of the board the time has arrived for the re-organisation of the University into four independent universities.” Ho asked the ruling of the Chancellor whether this and a consequential motion came within tbe powers of tho Board of Studies as defined in the University Amendment Act of 1914. The", Chancellor said ho had no hesitation in ruling that tho Board of Studies had no power- to deal with such a mutter. Pursuant to this ruling Dr Anderson then gave notice of tho following motion: “That, tho senate regrets that the time of the Board of .Studies should be taken up with subjects over which tho board has no jurisdiction.” GENERAL. On the motion of tho Vice-Chancellor (ho Hon. JDr Collins was appointed treasurer. Professor J. The Vice-Chancellor submitted a letter announcing tho establishment of tho University of Delhi, and also a reply which ho had formulated. Tho reply, which reciprocated (ho greetings of the now university, was approved. An application for the extension of three Taranaki scholarships was considered, and tho scholarships were extended for one year.
