A MURDEROUS ASSAULT
THE WAIPAWA CASE. VICTIM STILL LINGERING. (Peb United Peess Association.) , WAIPAWA, January 17. .. At. the adjourned inquest on the body of Pubi Maiha. who murderously assaulted bis wife on January 2 and afterwards shot himself, a verdict was returned that death was caused by a gunshot wound self-in-flicted, The evidence showed that deceased pleaded with his wife not to go away with another Native, hut his attitude _to the woman suddenly turned from pleading into rage, and Maiha struck her violently with a hammer on the head. He afterwards secured a gun and shot the top of his head away. Mrs Maiha is still lingering, but in a very’ low condition. !
