COAL PRICE DISPUTE. 1000 MINERS IDLE. SYDNEY, January 17. The Miners' Federation states that 1000 miners are idle on the South Coast in consequence of the closing down of two large, collieries, owing to the dispute between the and the Railway Commissioners. The federation has decided to ask the Government either to compel the owners to work the mines, or to take them over and work them in the interests of the community. FACTORY’ EXPLOSION. THREE GIRLS KILLED. MELBOURNE, January 17. An explosion at the factory of the Australian Explosive Company at Deer Park, near Melbourne, occurred in a hut, where four young women were filling cartridges, killing Florence Smith (aged 27). Maggie Nelson (21). and Mav Jackson (20), and seriously injuring Olive Baxter. Miss Nelson and Miss Jackson were killed instantly being shockingly mutilated. Miss Smith succumbed in 10 minutes after the accident. The victims were just about to stop work for the day when the explosion occurred. The cause is unknown.
