Mr C. E. S tat ham, M.P., was a passenger by the second express for the north yesterday on a holiday visit to Levin. Mr W. R. Waters left for the north by the second express yesterday and will be present during the Sander's Cup contests in Auckland. Mr T. M. Gillies was a passenger for Tiinaru by the second express yesterday. Messrs W. Brown (president) and E. Cheshire, representing the executive of the local Seamen’s Union, were passengers by the second express yesterday for Wellington. Mr T. Q’Byme, secretary of the Southland Sawmill Workers’ Union, is at present in Dunedin. Sir Alfred Pickford. Imperial Commissioner of Overseas Boy Scouts, is at present on a visit to Australia. Mr T. S. Weston, chairman of the Employers’ Association, is at present visiting Dunedin. A fyondon cable announces the death of Father Alan John Westby Perceval, a. son of Sir Westby Perceval, former Agent General for New Zealand. Mr P. W, Uphill has informed the St. Peter’s Vestry that ho is resigning from that charge, and has sent in his resignation to the bishop. Mr Uphill states that his. prolonged visit to the commonwealth is absolutely imperative. Lieutenant-commander Agar, V.C.. has been unpointed commander of H.M.S. Philomel, in place of Commander Walsh, as from Decembe- 29. Lieutenant J. L. Isacke. R.N. (retired), has been appointed temporarily to the Chatham, as from January 1. 1923. The Clnt-ha. Leader announces that Captain Grindloy. the officer in charge of (he Balclutha. Salvation Army Corps for some months past, is under orders (p transfer to Roslyn. to which place he will leave tomorrow. A Sydney Press Association cable message states that Dr Herbert- Robert Seddon. of Tauranga. New Zealand, has been appointed veterinary pathologist, at Glcnfield Veterinary Experiment Farm, under the Department of Agriculture. Mr A. M. Kester, assistant manager of the Christchurch Press company has been appointed manager in place of Mr P. Selig, who has retired. The Rev. Dr S. Bickersteth. Canon of Canterbury, and Chaplain to his Majesty the King, preached to a large congregation at Christchurch Cathedral on Sunday evening. Dr Bickersteth is at present on a tour, studying the Anglican Church in the dominion.

A pleasing ceremony took place at. the Mosgiel Woollon Mills prior to tho retirement. of Mr Janies .Smith after a period of service extending over 41 years. The staff of the weaving department presented Mr Smith with a rug and a case of Loewe pipes as a mark of (he esteem in which he is held. Mr Hiddlestono made tho presentation. and wished the recipient every happiness in his retirement. Mr Smith made suitable acknowledgment.
