AMATEURS AND WIRELESS
AUSTRALIAN PROGRESS. (Fhom Odb Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY. January 11. An endeavour is shortly to bo made by Sydney and Melbourne amateur wireless operators to receive messages from amateur wireless stations in the United States. About a year ago amateurs in England were extremely successful in receiving messages from American amateur transmitting .stations. No difficulty is experienced by Vustralian amateurs in hearing the commercial stations of the United States, but these stations are using hundreds of times the power that will be used by the American amateur transmitters, and, in addition, the long waves emitted by the commercial stations have much better carrying properties than the ver yshort waves used for amateur communication A number of prizes have been offered by Melbourne and Sydney firms for the amateurs most successful in their endeavour to receive the American signals, and the test will be carried out before the jniddle of the year.
