One of the most remarkable lamps in the world never casts a shadow. Solid pieces of wood can bo placed across it, but it continues to give an absolutely clear and regular light. This lamp is being used in surgery, in cases where a shadow would be disastrous. Another feature is that it gives 3000 candle-power without throwing off any heat. An ordinary 100-watt bulb is used, and the whole secret lies in a wonderful series of mirrors, which reflect the light and increase : ts power. In an ordinary lamp it would ho impossible to obtain as much light without a great deal of heat, tho absence of which is necessary in many operations. Tho mirrors reflect tho light around the obstruction, and unless the globe is completely covered it is impossible to produce a shadow. It is no easy task to fit the mirror j so that all reflect, the light on the same spot. A minute inaccuracy would ruin the whole use of (ho lamp. Hyde Park Barracks, London, now turned into an infantry depot, were built in 1879; the stables are regarded as among the airiest in Europe. A machine which wraps up 1500 loaves an hour, sealjng them in waxed paper without their being touched by human hands, was exhibited in London recently.
