Various Charges.—Henry Barrett, a young man, was charged with obtaining from Jane Hoyler, at Green Island on January 13, a pair of underpants, a soft collar, and a tie, of the total value of Its t)d bv means of false pretences; also, with stealing two tics from Jane Koyler on the same dale, and with using obscene language when arrested.— .Senior-sergeant Mathieson said that the accused, who pleaded guilty, had gone to the complainant and asked for the articles mentioned in the first charge. He had stated that ho was one of the Johnstons, of Green Island, and that he would send a child witli fbo money later. The complainant’s suspicious had been aroused after n time, and on the strength of information she had gathered, she informed the police and Barrett was arrested by Constable Harris, tt was on his way to the police station that the accused had given vent to the language. He had given a number of wrong names when arrested, but had admitted the right one eventually.—ln answer to the Magistrate, the accused sai-d that ho had been under the influence of drink at the time. Ho had come in from Otokia for the day.The senior-sergeant added that the man was “wanted” on two other charges—failing to maintain his wife and for a breach of railway by-law at Christchurch. —A sentence of two months’ imprisonment was imposed on the first charge, the accused being convicted on tbo other two. Then the senior-sergeant mentioned that the sum of its 3d had been found on the accused. He suggested (hat this should be handed to the complainant, os the articles could not be returned, the accused suffering from a certain contagious disease. —Tho Magistrate sa.id that in view of that ho should be under supervision. Barrett was ordered to be detained for a year's reformative treatment, and the amount found on him was ordered to be paid to the complainant. Alleged Perjury,—George Long (Mr White) who was charged with committing perjury while giving evidence at a judicial hearing in October, had his case adjourned to January 29, on the application of his solicitor. Drunkenness.--A first offender was fined the amount of his bail (2tri) on a charge of drunkenness.
