BLUESKIN SHOW

A SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION. The Blueskin A. and P. Society held its fifty-fifth annual show at. \V;.itati on Saturday. The weather conditions for the event turned out to be good, but, as the indications in the morning were otherwise, the attendance was smaller than on some previous occasions, tho gate receipts amounting to £22 odd as against £29 10s last year. Another factor that doubtless affected tho attendance was tho non-stoppage of the second express at Waitati. The Railway

Department has usually fallen in with tho society’s request to stop this train in the past, and over 100 people have on occasion made the trip from Dunedin. But this year, for reasons probably best known to itself, the decartmont would not agree to have the train stopped. In other directions the show was a decided success, both from tho point of view of the numerical sirength and the quality of the exhibits. Tho entries exceeded those for 1922 by over 100, numbering close on 400—-a total that must be considered as eminently satisfactory when it is remembered that the show is one practically confined to horses'

and cattle. _ In a dairying district jt must bo expected that the cattle section will bo particularly strong, and some fine animals wore shown. The Ayrshire class were very prominent and the quality pleased the judge well. Both the champion cow and the champion bull were owned by Mr P. Ireland. The male had plenty of size and quality, but was inclined to lack constitution. The cow was a big animal, showing good dairying qualities and a strong constitution. Mr D. Reid’s throe-year-old heifer struck, the judge as an animal that might take the championship in another year. A promising two-year-old was also shown in Mr 0. Crawford’s heifer. The younger sections were all patronised by very fair specimens, and in the other classes the standard was satisfactory. An exhibit of interest was that of calves shown by

children under 16 years, the number (14) justifying the committee in its enterprise. The horses were present, in numbers that were scarcely expected, and the quality, especially in tho light classes, was exceedingly good. The hacks, especially, were of a quality not often seen at. a small show. The list hacks, of which there were 17, made a striking ring, and the judge had no easy job in making a decision. Mr C. Driver’s mare, which secured the first prize, was an animal full of life and action, which should take a lot of beating elsewhere. Mr D. R. Smaill possesses a good animal in the three-vear-old colt, which took second place. A little on the green side yet, it should prove a doughty opponent in another year. Two Shetland ponies, enhibited by Captain Hankey, were warm favourites with the crowd, the diminutive 'entire, standing only two foot four inches, being an object of special interest. The secretary (Mr P. Briscoe), treasurer (Mr T. Brown), and the other officials worked hard to make the show the success it nroved. Following is the prize list:— CATTLE. Ayrshire s. Judge : Mr C. J.
