DOMINION AWARDS

THE NEW REGULATIONS. Regulations under the Arbitration Act, as amended last session, have now been framed to enable the setting up of dominion councils of conciliation for the purpose of arriving at dominion awards for one particular industry. Until the law was altered it. was only possible for awards to relate to one industrial district, but power is nowgiven for two or more of the eight industrial districts of New Zealand to he covered by one award in any one trade or calling.

Ordinarily, a district conciliation council consists of three assessors on cither side, but for a dominion council it will be possible to increase the number to six To secure a dominion award, nr an award covering Iwo or more industrial districts, it will be necessary for the application to be made by a registered association in the industry concerned, cither on the employers' or the 'workers' side. Unless there is some such registered association, the number (f parties to be cited in a dispute affecting several districts, or the dominion as a whole, would necessarily bo large.
