ANNUAL CONFERENCE. (Pee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 11. Tho fifth annual conference of the Pharmaceutical Society of Now Zealand, which is being held in conjunction with the Australian Society, was. opened last evening with a public reception by the Mayor ana tho Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister of Health). The conference represents 3500 chemists in Australia and New Zealand caring for a population of 6,000,000 people. . Mr A. R. Bailey (president of the Australian Pharmaceutical Society) replied on behalf of the visiting chemists. The New Zealand remits are being he'd over until to-morrow,, and the conference this morning was restricted to the discussion of matters before the Australasian Conference. Tho President (Mr Bailey), in his opening address, tiid that it was necessary that Australia and New Zealand should foster close relations. Co-operation was very necessary in regard to defence, and the Pharmaceutical Society must organise a scheme of training to meet emergencies. With this in view ne submitted that apprentices on a per capita basis should be specially (rained to taJce charge of their brand). In army services sufficient attention hod not been paid vo pharmaceutical research. The election of officers resulted as follows: — President of session and until successor is appointed, Mr F. Castle (president of tho New Zealand Pharmaceutical Society); hon. treasurer, Mr J. W. Cochrane (Victoria); hon. general secretary, Mr C. L. Butchers; delegates—Messrs A. Wadsworth (New South Wales', A. R. Bailey (Victoria), S. Crawley (Queensland), F. Castle (New Zealand), F. P. Gulley (Western Australia); auditors. Messrs S. Crowley and W. Archer (Sydney); scientific secretary, Mr S. Crowley (Brisbane). It was decided to levy the annual subscriptions on a membership basis instead, of on a flat rate, as follows: —£1 for under 100 members, £2 for under 200, £3 for under 300, and £5 for 500 and over. A committee was set up to draw up a list of possible and desirable subjects for leteurch, and to draw up gome scheme to encourage students to make research in the subjects chosen. The conference adjourned till the evening.
