AUSTRALIAN SCIENTISTS ARRIVE

THE WELLINGTON MEETING. (From Onn Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON. January 10. The commonwealth delegates to the meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science arrived in Wellington from Sydney by the Ulimaroa this afternoon. There arc over 150 delegates, and many of them are accompanied by members of their families. ’Hie meeting of the association will commence to-morrow. The first public lecture will bo given in the evening, when the president-elect, Mr G. 11. Kuibbs, , G.M.G.. of (ho Commonwealth Institute cJL Science and Industry, will deliver an address. In addition to the Australian delegates a large number of New Zealand scientists will also attend the congress. At one of the meetings there will be a discussion on upper winds, during which the commonwealth meteorologist. Captain Kidson (an ex-Canterbury resident), will give the results of some valuable researches as to the circulation of winds during cyclones. Tho staff at Apia observatory have forwarded valuable results of their observations which, it is anticipated, will bo of importance in connection with future navigation, and will lead to an improvement in weather forecasting. Several interesting papers relating (o tho recent solar eclipse and wireless transmission will be read and discussed. The miostion of a volcano observatory for New Zealand will bo brought up. The recent, earthquakes at Tanpo received some attention from Now Zealand geologists and physicists, but owing to the lack of an observatory enabling systematic observations to be made over a number of years, the significance of the recent disturbances remains uncertain. Several of the Australian geologists who are visiting the congress have had an opportunity of 'studying (ho volcano observatory at Kiln veil, in'Hawaii, and consequently tho discussion on this subject, which is being introduced by Mr Russmilch mid Dr Allan Thomson, is" likely to lead to some practical proposals being put forward.
