CRICKET.

COUNTRY WEEK. SOUTH v. WEST OTAGO. This year only two teams of country cricketers have come into town for country week, one team representing South Otago and one representing West Otago. The first game of the series began at the Caledonian Ground yesterday morning, when the two visiting teams met. Unfortunately the fine promise of the early morning was not fulfilled, and a heavy shower fell before II o’clock. After an interval rain continued throughout the afternoon. West Otago won the loss and went in to bat. It was a batsman’s wicket, and’ most of the members of the team succeeded m compiling a creditable score. Easily the best individual performance was that of W. Sinclair, who reached 54- before being caught by Cations off Stewart’s bowling. Sedan and Cations were bowling well to begin with, but fell off somewhat as the game proceeded. Stewart was the one who troubled the batsmen most, and after the luncheon adjournment, which was taken at 12.30, he got two wickets cheaply. The score at the adjournment was 159 for seven wickets. Though play was resumed in the afternoon the rain made it impossible to continue for long. When stumps were drawn nine wickets had fallen for 189 runs. Messrs E. Hamel and W. Fraer were the umpires. In order that the game may be concluded before the other matches start this afternoon it has been decided to resume play at 9 a.ni. to-day. The Englishmen gave a bright, crisp display with the bat, passing the combined total in 20 minutes. Brand was the highest scorer \yitn 85. He scored all round the wicket, though he gave a difficult chance in the outfield when his score was about 40. He hit a dozen boundaries and one six. Lowry ran up 48 in 30 minutes, including boundaries and one sixer. Most of the Englishmen displayed clever placing, and few faulty strokes were seen, tnough the field work of the combined team was very fine, the visitors in this respect not having an opportunity to show their capabilities. Mao Lean. the wicket-keeper, was responsible for tnree of the wickets, the local batsmen running out to the slow deliveries of Hill-Wood and Tyldesley, while Hill-Wood bowled five noballs.
