FALSE PRETENCES
YOUNG MAN CHARGED. A SERIES OF THEFTS. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON. January 5. A young man named Archibald Andrew Charles Scott, with many aliases (including four detectives’ names and two doctors’), appeared lx? fore Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day on 14 charges of theft of clothing and jewellery, and charged also with false pretences and assuming tho designation of police officers Accused pleaded guilty to all counts. The chief detective explained that accused had come out of tho reformatory at Invercargill on November 18, and at Wellington on November 23. He obtained board and lodging at several seaside places by false pretences, and, having secured tho confidence of his fellow lodgers, stole movable goods and decamped. Ho assumed the designnlion of police officers and of doctors to aid him in his plans of obtaining the confidence of people. He was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, with hard labour, to bo followed by a period of reformative detention for two years.
