WAITAHUNA SPORTS AND PICNIC

The annual sports and picnic took place on New Year’s Dav *on tho Recreation Ground, Waitahuna. The morning broke with a north-east drizzle, and continued until the early part of tho afternoon, when it cleared up considerably. Tho adverse weather conditions to some extent affected the gate takings, and in some of tho running events entries were not large. Tho chain-stepping, ticket race, and sheep-guessing competition were well supported, the latter realising £5 lir-. Fortunately tho sale of members’ tickets was exceptionally largo, and this will compensate the committee for the falling off in other directions. Tho various events were run off in good time, the committee having all preliminary arrangements well in hand. The president (Mr A. Wightman) was untiring in his efforts for the comfort of both competitors and patrons, while the post of secretary was in tho capable hands of Mr Ernie Ryan. A grand concert was held in Carmody’s Hall in.- the evening, a crowded house greeting the jierformers. Tho committee had the greatest difficulty in finding sufficient seating accommodation, and a large number had to be content with standing room only. Tho concert party consisted of Major and Mrs Lampon, Mrs W. Andrews. Miss Bessie Thomson, and Mr Sid Angell—all of Dunedin; and the committee are to be congratulated on their enterprise in secur ing such talented performers. The pro gramme was a varied ,one, and tho performers mot with a most enthusiastic reception, all having ,to accede to recalls. Milligan Bros. (Milton Pipe Band) were present on the ground during tho day, and they also contributed an item at the concert .in the evening. Tho following is tho pregramme of events: Maiden Foot Race.—G.
