NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT. The golf tournament, under the management of the Otago Golf Club, was continued at Balmacawen yesterday in perfect weather, and on an improved course. Monday’s putting competition was won by O. B. Wight. There were several ties to Iks played off before finality was reached. Yesterday the putting competition was won by M, Macbeth with 32. A Bogey handicap was won by R. G. Boott (he. 2) 3 up, R. \V. Scott (he. 6) 1 up. In a medal handicap ju. V. Scott defeated E. A. Scott. Tlie amateur championship was won by C. B. Wight, of St. Clair, who beat M. Macbeth, also of St. Clair, 7 up and 5 to play. At the conclusion of the games the prizes were presented by Mrs M'Arthur, Mr *■*■. i e C. M’Arthur offering apologies for the absence of the president, Mr C. W T . Rattray, and the captain, Mr H. W. Kelly. OTAGO AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. C. B. Wight (St. Clair) beat M. Macbeth (St. Clair) 7 up and 5 to play. In the first round of the final of Uie amateur championship of Otago both Wight and Macbeth drove well at the first nole. Macbeth pulled his second into the rushes, and failed to recover. Wight, playing a good second and a good run up, won the hole in 4. Both players were short in their seconds for the second hole, but halved it in 4 with good putting. The third hole was also halved in 4. At the fourth Might caught the green with his first, and won m 3. Both players pushed their drives into the rough at the fifth hole, but Maobeth, playing a beautiful second to within two yards of the pin, won the hole in 4. Wignt failed to recover from the rough. The sixth hole was halved in 3, Macbeth getting down a long putt. At the seventh, Wight got the better drive. Macbeth failed to reach the green with his second, socketed ms third, and Wight won in 4. Both played the eighth hole nicely. Macbeth was lucky to get down a long putt for half. The ninth was halved in 4, Macbeth putting well. Wight was playing beautiful golf at this stage, and was out with a very good score of 35 and 2up at the turn. At the tenth hole Wight found the rough on the right, and failed with his second, and the hole went to Maobeth in 4 to Wight’s 5. Both got good seconds at the eleventh hole. Wight pushed his third out to the rough, and Macbeth played a good third to the edge of the green. Wight’s ball was lost, and the hole went to Macbeth in 5. Wight again found the rough at the twelfth hole, and failed to get to the green with his second. Macbeth was short with his second, but won the hole in 4 to his opponent’s 5. At the thirteenth hole Wight was unfortunate in his drive, and both were under the lull with their seconds; but Wight, putting better, won the hole in 5. Wight topped his drive to the fourteenth hole and went into the flax; and Macbeth, playing a beautiful shot on to the green, won out in 3 to his opponent’s 5, making him 1 up. At the fifteenth hole Macbeth had a good second, and running up beautifully, won the hole in 4 to his opponent’s 5. At the sixteenth both got long drives. Macbeth found the rough with his secondhand Wight, playing the hole nicely, won in 4. Wight was short with his drive to the seventeenth, and Macbeth was just through the green. Both failed to get dead with their seconds, and halved the hole in 4. At the eighteenth hole—the final round —both got good drives, wight found the green when Macbeth was just through. Macbeth ran beautifully to within six inches of the pin, while Wight left himself an awkward putt, which, however, he successfully negotiated. The hole went to Maobeth in 4. This completed the first round, with 78 each for 18 holes, and Macbeth 1 up. Wight had honour at the first hole in the second round, both getting away a good rise. Macbeth pushed the second out into the rough, while Wight hit a good straight shot short of the green. Macbeth failed to recover from the rough, but holed a long putt for half in 5. Both found trouble with the drives in the second hole, and Wight made a good recovery out of the blinker to tho left and another half in 5 resulted. At the third hole Macbeth again found the rough with his drive, while Wight, playing a safe second to the green, won the hole in 4 to his opponent’s 5, making the match square at this stage. At the fourth hole Macbeth played a beautiful shot with his iron to within a yard of the pin. Wight was on the green, but Maobeth holed 2, which maue one up again. At the terrace Macbeth found trouble with his drive, and took two shots to recover, Wight playing a good second from a heavy lie played a nice 3 on the green, and Maobeth gave up the hole. At the sixth hole both made good drives. Macbeth was half stymied, but missed his putt for the half hole, giving Wight the hole in 4 and making him 1 up. Wight had the better drive at the seventh hole, Macbeth having pushed his shot out to the right. Wight found the green nicely with the second and won the hole in 4 to his opponent’s 6. making him 2 up. Macbeth found the rough at the eighth hole, Wight taking a nice drive down tho centre of tho course. Macbeth was short with his second, and Wight played a nice iron to tho green three yards from the pin. and won the hole in 4 to his opponent’s 5. At the ninth hole both had good drives, but both were short with their second. Macbeth had the misfortune over his third to hit his opponent’s ball, and Wight won the hole in an easy 4 to his opponent’s 5, this making him 4 up. At the mount both got good drives. Macbeth just put his second through the green, while Wight was nicely on the green too. Macbeth was short with his third, and failed to get down in 4, making Wight 5 up. Tipperary was halved in a very excellent 5, Macbeth just missing his putt for 4. At M'Glashan both were iust short fo the green with their drives, and Wight, running up nicely, got 3 to his opponent’s 4, making him dormy 6, Tho next hole was the finish of the match. Wight got a nerfect 4 to his opponent’s 5. the match ending 7 up and 5 to play. Wight during tho afternoon played a very steady game, his score being just 2 for the 14 holes.
