Tho Port Molyneux Caledonian Society's fiftv-fifth annual sports were held at AV Usher Bay on New Year’s Day. The weather was very threatening, and a heavy drizzle feu until about 11 a.m„ when the weather cleared up but not sufficiently to make conditions comfortable under foot or for seating. Nevertheless, there must have been about 3000 on the grounds, tho gate takings being £154 L2 Qn account of the improvements made to tho ground during the past year the funds of tlio society were nigh depleted, so tho entry fee was increased to Is 6d, membership tickets (ss) still remaining the same. There is no doubt as time goes on, with such gates and Kaka Point getting more popular every year, but that tiio sports at AVilsher Buy will yet draw the running, chopping, dancing, etc., champions of New Zealand. . , ~ Everything went with a swing, and all the events wero despatched in good time, great interest being taken in tho dancing and chopping events. The megaphone was introduced for tho first time in announcing tho results, and for those who wero listening at a distance it was a great success, but by those who did not happen to bo there just at the time the old-time blackboard was ecdly missed. HELD AT MIDDLEMARGH. Tho date of the annual sports of the Strath-Taicri Caledonian Society, which for years past have been held on New lear s Day, was changed this year, and the meeting took place yesterday. There wore many who did not favour the alteration, which was made with the object of coming within the circuit of other Central Otago meetings, but if yesterday's attendance is to bo taken as a reflection of the general opinion, tho change should be decidedly beneficial. For tho gate (£135) was a record, and the number of entries was also fairly large. Tho day was threatening, but with tho exception of a shower about lunch time, there was no rain until just on the close of tho mooting. The visitors included competitors and their friends from as far away as Dunedin; entrants for tho children s events being well represented. Regarding the conduct of the meeting, it might not be out of place to suggest the inclusion of an inside ring among next years’ arrangements. It is questionable, too. if some of tho distances wero as accurately marked off as they might have been; a few times being recorded that wore decidedly, to say tho least, unlikely. There was considerable discussion after one or two of the running events in regard to an alleged advantage with the men taking tho inside running when finishing. The finishing point was, as tho course was practically circular, on what may bo termed a bend, aid, given such a position, it is easy to understand that a tape held straight from one man to the other gives an advantage to tho “inside” competitors.. One or two little matters of the sort should bo given attention if it is desired to make the sports of tho standard they should be. , Tho entries in the running events wero satisfactory on tho whole, and some fairly good races resulted, but it cannot be said that anything approaching the sensational took place. Perhaps the feature of leading interest with the fields division where, especially in the children's events, some excellent, national dancing was done by the little folk. The entries were sufficiently large to snow that interest in this form of exercise is fur from waninj in tho Central part of Otago. Others of tne old Scottish sports wore also popular. Tho piping-was commented upon favourably by the judge. Tho medal presented by tie late Mr D. M’Phorson for most points in the opei) class was won by Mr 0. Selby, a well-known southern performer. Tho secretary (Mr C. Robertson) and his assistant (M'r A. Robertson) were busy people during the day, and every credit is due to them. Other busy people were the members of tho Middlemarch. Brass Band, which-sup-plied music that was greatly appreciated. In tho evening a dance and social were held, the trophies being presented there. Following are results: RUNNING. 129 Yards Hurdles.
