M.C.C. TEAM IN AFRICA.

SECOND TEST MATCH. CAPETOWN, January 1. In fine weather there was an attendance of 10,000 people to see the second test match between England and South Africa. Taylor won the toss for South Africa. The Newlanda ground was slower than the Johannesburg wicket, and throughout the play it assisted the bowlers on account of the uncertain flight of the ball after pitching. Fender took advantage of the wicket. Backed up by excellent fielding, his bowling average at one stage was four wickets for 15 runs. South Africa was dismissed for 113 runs. The M.C.C. team had lost four wickets for 128 when stumps were drawn. Russell and Sandham made the Africans’ bowling appear easy, and registered 59 before they were separated. Sandhain’s departure was followed by the loss of Russell and Woolley for an additional run. Mead and Carr kept things moving till stumps were drawn. Oarr played a lively game, and hit seven boundaries, Hall, a left-hander, worried the batsmen, maintaining an excellent length. The fielding was brilliant. Scores:— SOUTH AFRICA. —First Innings. VICTORIA v. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. MELBOURNE, January 1. Owing to rain on Saturday the start of the match, Victoria v. South Australia, was postponed till Monday, when the weather was fine and the wicket good. Victoria has lost fpur wickets for 175 (Mayne 18, Ryder 64, D. Hartkopf 55 not out, Ransford 31 not out). The batsmen were very cautious against dangerous bowling. The fielding was exceptionally keen. MELBOURNE. January 2. fßeoeived January 2, at 10.30 p.m.) The match was resumed in fine weather on a firm wicket which, when South Australia batted, appeared to be playing slowly. Victorian’s first innings realised 328 (Liddioutt not out 37). Whitty took five wickets for 82 and Moreton two for 69. (Received January 3, at 1.5 a.m.) When stumps were drawn South Australia had lost eight wickets for 232 (A. Richardson 30, V. Richardson 60, Rnndell 44, Gould not out 39, Bennett not out 20). SECOND ’TEST MATCH. THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM. ( The following is the New Zealand eleven chosen to play in the test match at Christchurch :—Alcott, Dacre, Garrard, Snedden (Auckland). Bernau, Collins, Condliffe, M'Girr (Wellington), Lambert (Taranaki). Blunt (Christchurch), and Shepherd (Otago), Twelfth man: Sandman (Christchurch). Rountree is not available os wicketkeeper. OTAGO v. AUCKLAND. As the time approaches for the Otago v. Auckland match interest increases in the fixture. The northern team in its somewhat weakened state (owing to so many of its men being chosen for the test match) has not shaped so well against the other provinces as it would otherwise have done; still, there are five cricketers in the ranks who are boupd to give Otago a closely contested game. Oirr local players have not had much opportunity this Reason to strike form, but the material is there. M’Beath and Casey are a pair of bowlers who should trouble the visitors considerably, despite the fast wicket that has been prepared. There are some attractive batsmen also in the team. An all-round exposition of the game may confidently to looked forward to.
