LAWN TENNIS

DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. TOURNAMENT AT EASTINGS. (Per United Press Association.) HASTINGS, December 27. 'lhe New Zealand lawn tennis championship tourney was continued on the Hastings courts to-day in fine but overcast weather and before a large attendance. The day’s play was confined to the eliminating rounds m all the events. It is not expected that any semi-finals will be reached before Friday- in the men’s singles the most prominent players remaining are Dr Lauren ton, Aitken, Robson' the France brothers, and Peacock in the first half of the draw, and Oliivier, Greenwood, Sims, Pearso, and Still m the second half. In the men’s doubles Ur Laurenson, Oliivier, Allison, Wallace, Reacock, Sims, Quill, Parker, Franco, Irance, Pearse, Edmondson, and Still were prominent in the first'half of the draw, and Goss, Greenwood, Griffiths, and Robson.are h ni< -) s ,* : Powerful remaining in the second had. The ladies’ singles and doubles and the mixed doubles are not very far advanced. ihe most important match of the day was that between Dr Laurenson and G. Aitken (Christchurch). The pair were very evenly matched, but Aitken ‘was palpably tired in 110 l j as f set- Dr Laurenson excelled in backhand and overhand work. The issue was m doubt till the last few games, when Ur Laurenson asserted himself with some beautiful backhand shots and had Aitken at his mercy. Aitken and Wilding entered for the championship doubles, but the latter was unabie to bo present. Two good men’s doubles were played in the morning, Peacock and *-.iins beating Quill and Parker in three straight sets, and Oliivier and Dr Laurenson easily vanquishing Swainson and Salmond, the latter pair being unable to obtain a game in the Inst set. The winning pair should prove the winners of the championship doubles as well as sharing the honours in the results of the men’s singles. The holders of the championship, doubles, Goss and Greenwood (Christchurch) nave won their first two games, and should have no difficulty in reaching the semi-final. Their first contest with Oakley and Milburn (Napier) was very close, the latter pair taking the first set 6—4. The champions had to be in their best form in the remaining sets, eventually -winning each by narrow margins. In their next game Goss and Greenwood easily beat Richards and Craigie (Napier), the powerful drives and overhead work of Goss being a special feature. A long tussle eventuated between Misses Fenwick (Napier) and Knight (Auckland) and Misses M'Laren (Otago) and Welsh (*« ellington), This was a case of the survival of the fittest, the rallies being exceptionally long without any great brilliancy on either side. At the close of the day’s play light rain set in. The prospects are not bright for to-morrow’s programme. MEN’S SINGLES.
