BOWLING.

CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT. The howlers’ Christmas tournament was begun yesterday, under the auspices of the Dunedin Centre, on the Ca-versham, Roslyn, and North-East Valley Greens. The greens were all in excellent condition for bowling, the weather was ) erfect. and everyone was consequently in the best humour for the competition. ; One round was played in the forenoon and two in the afternoon. The fourth round will start at 9 o’clock Ibis morning, and this afternoon the competition will bo brought uo to the final game, which will bo played’ on the Dunedin Club’s Green to-morrow. Tn the first round of Section A, at the Caversham Green, the Green Island rink had a runaway game against St. Clair, being 13—0 at the seventh head, and 30—12 before the last end, which was not played. The Caledonian rink led 16—3 against NorthEast Valley at the tenth head. In the following seven heads the latter came up to 9, but at the nineteenth end the former were leading 19 —10, and the game finished there. The second round resulted in easy wins for Smellie (Green Island), Tillie (Caledonian), and Lock (St. Clair) against NorthEast Valley, Dunedin, and St. Kilda respectively. In the third round Lock had a hard fight against Sneeston, the score being 18 all at the nineteenth head. Both sides played first-class bowls. Smellie and Wilkinson also provided an interesting game. At the twelfth head the score was 19—10 against Wilkinson, but in. the next four heads it was evened up to 19 —15. In the next two heads Smellie went up two, but the last three went to Wilkinson, resulting in a tie. An extra head was played, and Smellie won by a single point. The Caledonian and Green Island rinks came out of the day's play with three wins to their credit. ■ In Section B Piddington (St. Clair) was 10 ahead of Blackwood (Caversham) m the middle stages of the game, and maintained the lead to the end, finishing 22 —13. Simpson (Anderson’s Bay) established an early lead against M'Gillivray (Roslyn), and managed to keep his position for the rest of the game, although the Roslyn rink fought out the game determinedly. . Neill (Dunedin) had an easy -win from Lindsay (Kaikorai). The latter, however, hung to his opponent, and considerably improved his position in the later stages of the game, after having been down 11 —0 at the ninth head. In the second round Blackwood lost M'Gillivray, Scoring 28 to his opponent’s 9, and Simpson defeated Neill, 23—15. Lindsay and Piddington provided the spectators with an interesting exhibition of bowls in the latter half of their game, which ended 22—19 in Lindsay’s favour. At the fourteenth head the score was 19—11. Each side gained one point in the next two ends. Piddington’s rink increased their score by three in the two successive heads, but the next two went to Lindsay. This left the score at 32—15 before the last head, in which the St. Olnir rink put up 4. In the third round the St. Clair team had a close tussle with Neill’s Dunedin rink, until the last few heads, in which they went up from 10 to 16, while their opponents stayed at 11. Simpson and Lindsay won by easy margins, though they did not get to the end of their games. The Roslyn Green was in splendid condition in the morning, and as it was rolled twice during the _ luncheon interval it played equally well in the afternoon, when it was fairly keen. The most exciting game in the first round was the contest between E. Harraway (Dunedin) and J. Marshall (Kaikorai). After playing five heads Marshall was seven and Harraway nil. At the twelfth head Marshall was skill seven, and Harraway had scored 10. As the game did not start punctually, permission was granted to continue beyond time, and the full number of heads (21) was played. Scoring was even during the latter part of the game, which ended in a win for Harraway by two points (16 to 14). At one stage in the game between W. Foster (Caledonian) and J. C. Rigby (North-East Valley) the former was 21 and Rigby was seven. In the next head Foster was lying four shots, and Rigby drove with his first bowl and missed. With his other bowl, however, he drew the actual shot, and the score was then 21 to 8 instead of 25 to 7. as it would have been had ho failed with his last shot. Foster was always well in the lead in this game, and finished by winning by 27 to 10. The contest between T. C. Coull (St. Clair) ,and J. M'Curdy (St. Kilda) promised to be an even one at the thirteenth head when the former was 12 and the latter 10. But Coull then took charge of the game, and at the nineteenth head he was leading by 20 to 10. M'Curdy scored one on the next head, and the game ended in a win for Coull by 21 to 11. When 11 heads of the match between P. Carolin (St. Kilda) and A. Portman (West Harbour) had been played both had scored 11. Carolin was three up on the fifteenth head, and then Portman got five and more than held his own till the finish, winning by 25 to 17. The only close game in the second round was the contest between Rigby and Portman. The scores were equal on the fourteenth head, and then Portman got three and held the lead till the finish, winning by 20 to 18. The feature of the third round was the close contest between Harraway and Coull, both of whom were then unbeaten. At the eighth head Coull was 11 and Harraway was one. The Dunedin player then forged ahead, and at the sixteenth head he was 11 to Coull’s 13. The following head saw Harraway gain a lead that Coull was unable to overtake. Harraway was lying one, with the next two shots belonging to Coull. Harraway then cut out Coull’s two second shots, and finished by lying six. The North-East Valley Green was in good order for the day’s play. In several of the rinks play was very close, so close, indeed, as will be seen from the scores, that there was only a point or two separating the contesting rinks. The play should bo particularly interesting to-day. Following are the results: CAVERSHAM GREEN. ' Section A. First Round. Rawlinson, Lean. Harraway.
