A SERIES OF THEFTS. (Per United Press Association.! HAMILTON, December 13. ' At the Supreme Court Henry Thomas Smith, late constable and clerk of the court at Kawhai, was charged with having committed 12 thefts, nine of them beirig in respect of moneys paid into court, and throe others in regard to the alleged . disappearance of various articles from Kawhai wharf. Smith *was indicted before a jury of 12 to answer two of the charges. The ! other cases will be taken later on in batches “ of two or three. Evidence was given that the money was paid to accused and hot acknowledged. _ After a retirement of half an hour the jury returned with, a verdict of guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy on account of the laxity of tfjp , J audit aud the stigma cast on the faniilyi Sentence was deferred. ... ,>
