CATTLE IMPORTATION

THE CANADIAN EMBARGO. DEBATE IN THE COMMONS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, December 12. The Bill removing the embargo on the importation of Canadian cattle was read a third time in the .House of Commons. A storm was occasioned by the withdrawal of the clause permitting cattle importation fronj the other dominions on the same terms as those for Canadian cattle, a clause which the Government supporters opposed. Sir Newton Moore insisted that a pledge had been given to Mr Hughes that such a clause would bo inserted. “What is the use,” he said, “of ‘kow-towing’ to one dominion while you are injuring Britain’s reputation with another?” Sir Newton Moore recalled some of the best bloodstock imported from Australia, and instanced Carbine Moreover, Australia had recently passed a Bill providing a bonus of 10s on the export of cattle. This was highly inconsistent with the British Government’s action in discouraging such trade. Mr John Ward said he had seen documents pledging the insertion of the danse. It was scandalous for the Government to withdraw the clause, as it bad a written understanding with the dominions to insert it. The Labour members opposed the deletion of the danse, which, nevertheless, was deleted. . Since the third reading, Sir Newton Moore said he had seen Lord Novar and Mr W. Ormsby-Gore (Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies), and had asked them to secure a re-insertion of the clause in the House of Lords. It is understood that the High Commissioners will approach the Duke of Devonshire to-morrow. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
