MONTHLY MEETING, r The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was hold yesterday, there being present: —Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), G. Livingstone, R. H. Todd, A. E. Lawrence, J. Smith. L. Sanderson. J. 11. Wilkinson, J Horn, M.P., and Hon. D. T. Fleming. GRANTS The following subsidies were granted conditional on Government approval:—Musselburgh, asphalting at school ground, cost £l2: Dunrobin. asphalting area of school ground, the committee’s contribution being £35. Gn the architect's recommendation it was decided to supply the 600 yards of netting and posts asked for by the Pool burn cominittey at an estimated cost of £A). and that naif cost of fencing between the Hapakaio residence property and ccmeteiy be paid up to £lO, , . An application from Papatowai for ±,lO with which to put the grounds in order was referred to the architect. It was decided that members should inspect the Training College gymnasium, which Mr Roydhouse suggested should be lifted up for basket-ball. “HIEVALE’S APPLICATION. Arising out of Edievale’s application for a now school, Mr 'Fleming moved- —“lhat, while it may bo premature to establish a now school at the present, time, it is apparent that a school will be required in a very lew years. In the meantime, the board record its appreciation of the generous ouer made by the settlers, which is accepted, and point out that the establishment of a school at Edievale would not detrimentally affect the other schools.” —The motion "was seconded by Mr Livingstone and carried unanimously. A TAUTUKU REQUEST. Two Tautuku residents (Messrs Gray and Partridge) asked that the school should bo reopened, there being seven children of school age in the district and ono under age. There was a prospect of there being more children in the district owing to the opentng of a new sawmill.—-It was decided to imorm the writers that the grant from the board would he £ls for each child and that it was usual for the residents to bring uio minimum salary up to £l2O. CORRESPONDENCE. The department forwarded a circular stating that the applications before it at present far exceed the sum available during tho current financial year and asking for a list indicating the order of urgency and the amount of the application,—To be supplied. An application by the Lands Department Tor ail exchange of land on the Bannockburn school site was referred to the chairman, Messrs Smith and Horn. The department intimated that the question ot whether education boards wore liable lor special rates on school properties cr not would be decided shortly in the Supremo Court, as the department was citing a test case.—Received. xne department advised that after December ill payments to technical colleges would bo maue direct and not through education hoards. —Received. An application oy the Dunrobin committee tor permission to enlarge the spare room of the school at its own expense was reiused on the grounds lhat the board did not consider it, advisable to enlarge tho school at present in view ot future requirements. j.no Teaneraki committee forwarded a protest against the proposal to shift the Elders,.e school to \v indsor Bark, the principal grounds of the protest being that the Teaneraki school would be detrimentally afiecteu. —Mr Livingstone said that ho understood that there was a feeling that Windsor Hark school would also be art'ected.—lt was decided to adhere to the previous decision. A request for stands for exhibiting drawing models for pupils was received, irom ueorge street and referred to the architect lor report.
