HIGH SCHOOLS’ GOVERNORS

A meeting of the High Schools’ Board of Governors was held yesterday; present— Professor Thompson (chairman), the Mayor (Mr J. S. Douglas), Dr Fulton, Messrs J. C. Stephens, J. M. Callaway, W. R. Brugh, and H. Webb. The financial statement showed that, after accounts amounting to £1560 19s 2d had been passed for payment, there remained a debit balance of £4635 2s lOd. The bpard approved of the principal’s recommendations for the award of David Baxter memorial bursaries to Ethel Maude Moodie and Noel Bassett Lendrum. On the motion of Mr Gallaway a' resolution was carried expressing appreciation of Mr Stephens’s services as president of the Workers’ Educational Association, congratulating his successor (Professor Thompson), and wishing the association success in its work. The board decided to support the fob lowing resolution, which was sent forward by the Secondary School Boards’ Conference;—“That the present system of scholarships be abolished, the money thus saved to be devoted to boarding expenses of children desiring secondary education and who are out of reach of a secondary school.” The Works Committee reported as fol-lows:—-We have to report having conferred with the architect concerning the carrying out. of inside renovations, etc., at tlie Boys’ High School Rectory, and the proposal to erect at the Boys’ High School some buildings of a temporary nature to provide for future needs. With reference to inside renovations at the rectory the architect recommended (bat these should be carried out on a percentage basis as in the case of some previous work at the rectory. We have decided to recommend the board to adopt the architects’ recommendation. With reference to the question of temporary accommodation at the Boys’ High School, we have asked the architects to make a report as to the most satisfactory method and the cost of providing such accommodation, and we recommend that this report, when received, be forwarded immediately to the Education Department, with a request for authority to expend the reqidrod amount out, of endowment revenue in the event of the present accommodation at the school proving to be insufficient for all who desire to enter next year. Wo would bo. sorry to see any pupils refused admission to the school, but we think that, unless some further accommodation is provided, that course will have to be adopted. Wo would recommend further, however, that the department be assured that the work will not lie proceeded with unless it is absolutely necessary. ’The board will be in a position by the end of January to estimate the numbers that will be seeking admission to the school. The new building would in these circumstances not he _ commenced before then, and a short period would therefore elapse after the reopening of school before the new accommodation would be ready; but wo believe that sufficient satisfactory arrangements could be made to accommodate the extra classes in the present buildings until the new rooms were completed.— The report was adopted.
