SOUTHLAND SHOW

INCREASED ENTRIES. FINE EXHIBITION OP CATTLE. SOME GOOD SHEEP. (From Our Own Reporter.) INVERCARGILL, December 12. The fifty-sixth annual Summer Show of the Southland A. and P. Association opened to-day Early in the morning the weather was dull) and light rain set in shortly after 8 o’clock. This continued at intervals until midday, but a fine afternoon was experienced, making conditions reasonably pleasant, though somewhat wet underfoot. The attendance was very fair for a first day, and if fine weather is experienced tomorrow a large attendance may be looked for. Entries compare very favourably with those of previous years, and show an increase of 659 over those of last year, the totals being 1031 and 968 respectively. The principal increase is in horses, in which the entries this year total 451, compared with 358 in 1921. Cattle entries show a slight increase, this year's total being 276, and last year’s 264. This year 209 sheep were entered, whereas last year the total was 229. Dairy produce also shows a falling off, last year’s entry being 95, and this year’s 75. From a breeder’s point of view the Southland show is regarded as an important fixture, and the quality of the exhibits to-day certainly upheld, if it did not enhance, the reputation of the district in that respect. Exhibitors were attracted from near and far, and the quality of animals paraded before the judges was such as would do credit to any show ring in New Zealand. In Border Leicester sheep the comnetition lav between Mr T. S. Little (Windsor). W. Kennedy (Otautau), G. P. Johnston (Maitland), and R. J. Anderson (Kauana), the first-named being most successful. Some fine animals were shown, and the bulk of the entry would do credit to any exhibitor. Mr Little annexed the championship in the ram section with an animal in a class in which some excellent sheep were shown, the winner having just a trifle in his favour. The reserve championship was secured by Mr Anderson with a fine, lowlegged sheep of splendid typo. Mr Little also won the championship in the female class with a ewo IB months and over, with a lamb at foot. The winner was a splendid animal, with a typically pure head and nice bone. The reserve championship was also secured bv Mr Little with a splendid animal. Mr T. Evans (Longbush) had matters pretty well his own way in English Leieesters, in which he annexed both championships. The principal entry in Romney Marsh came from the executors of the late T. L. Barnhill (Castleroek), who secured the majority of the awards, including the championship in ram section, with a particularly fine animal, which, in the opinion of the judge, would be hard to beat anywhere. The same exhibitors secured the reserve championship with a splendid animal carrying a very fine fleece. The champion ewe. also owned by the trustees of the late Mr Barnhill, was typical in every way. The reserve champion, owned by the same exhibitors._ was also a good animal, but a little plainer in the back. The section as a whole showed a big improvement on previous exhibitions. The entries in the beef Shorthorn section were not very large, but the quality was good. Tho yearling class in the male Section was rather weak. Cows, however, showed greater quality. The champion award went to a two-year-old heifer. Melba XII, exhibited by Mr John Lochead (Kaitangata). She was a beautiful animal, and although a little hard in the coat had predominating qualities which placed her first. The reserve champion cow, Ellesmere Lady Broadstamp 11, was taken from the dry cow class. The judge (Mr W. H. Gibson) said she was a credit to the breeder. She. however, did not stand quite so well as tho champion, and was not so good on beef points. Mr Angus Campbell’s Knapdalo Diamond Conqueror was awarded the championship in the male division. Ho was exhibited in the aged class, and, according to the judge, was a very fine animal, and would rank well in any show in New Zealand. Both the champion bull and heifer showed distinct imported type, being sired by Diamond Prince, the reserve champion bull. Langley Stamp, owned by Mr R. J. Anderson (Kauana). although handling nicely, and being a beefy bull, did not show quite the evenness of flesh as the champion, and did not stand quite as well. The champion and reserve champion in the female Ayrshire division were particularly good, and tho judge expressed the opinion, that they would be hard to beat anywhere. They possessed constitution, and showed splendid milking qualities, and in addition they had largo teats, which is a factor counting for a great deal. The cow which was champion at Wyndham, and champion at Dunedin, had to bo content with tho reserve championship today. The champion bull, owned by Mr A. M. Weir (Menzies Ferry), was rathev'strong in front, but was of a particularly good type, showing great constitution. The reserve champion, owned hy Mr C. H. Wilson (Lome), had a good body, but was a little feminine in the head. Jerseys were represented by some fine animals, and com petition in this section was keen. The championship was awarded to a three-year-bid heifer, in milk, owned by Mr R. Gibb (Menzies Ferry). This animal showed very nice ' quality, and had a really good head, a level outline, well-sprung ribs, and a good vessel. Tho reserve championship was secured by Mrs Hellyer’s Rowa Imply, which took first place in Dunedin, and which possesses a really good outline, and gives promise of carrying a capacious udder. Mrs Hellyer secured first for two-year-old heifers with Collingwood’s Kitty, which r« pealed her success at Dunedin, and was also first for heifer calf born since July 1. 1922 The latter was an outstanding animal, and was sired by tho imported bull Oxford Onyx. There were no entries in tho aged bull class, and the champion was found in the two-year-old class, the award going to Mr Thos. Norman’s Lavington’s Fair Lad. This class was judged by Mr C. E. Robertson, of Wellington. The reserve championship was awarded to Mrs Hellyer’s Collingwood’s Ringleader, a very stylish animal, showing great character and depth of body. In tho class for bull calved since July 1. 1922, Mrs Hellyer scored another first with an animal that beat his opponent in size and ago, though ho scored in width of hindquarters only. There was a largo entry and keen com petition in Friesians, which have obtained a strong following in Southland. The championship in the female class was awarded to Mr J. G. Leitch (Orawia), with an animal that gained a fairly easy victory. The reserve championship was gained by Messrs Gibb Bros. (Clifton), who showed a very nice cow of -eally good type. If she were not slightly lacking in the hindquarters she would bo hard to beat in any company. The championship in tho male class w-s gained hy a two-year-old owned by Mr Hugh Stewart (Lochiel), who secured tho honour by superiority of style over the reserve champion, which did not appear to advantage, though otherwise he was a splendid animal. The reserve champion in the female class was owned by Messrs Gibb Bros. (Clifton), and was worthy of tho honour. Tho jnmning competitions resulted as fot lows:— Maiden lupin—J.
