In the month of November there were issued in the Dunstan gold-field 1,346 miners’ rights, 147 miners’ licenses, 6 publicans’ licenses, and 1 wholesale license. Mr John L. ARRIVAL OF THE ESCORT. The Escort from the Gold Fields arrived in Dunedin last evening, bringing the following quantities of gold: ozs. dwts. His Honor sat for the purpose of hearing cause why S. G. Isaacs should not upon an order issued bv His Honor be fined LSO for contempt of Court in his having' _ written a leuer reflecting upon the administration of justice in the case of Isaacs v. Luscombe, at the time pending. The letter in question was published in the DcrtVy 'limes of the Bth instant; and there was a similar order against Daniel Campbell, printer of the paper, to show cause why he should not bo fined for contempt in the publication of the letter. Mr Barton and Mr Ward appeared for Mr Isaacs; and Mr J. M. Prendergast for Mr Campbell. . . The Judge said that as this was, he believed, the first case of the kind that had occurred in New Zealand, and as he hoped it would be the last, he thought ifne ends of justice would be satisfied by imposing a slight fine. The rule he should make would be to allow the cause shown on payment by Mr Isaacs of a fine of LlO within 24 hours. . Mr Prendergast re-urged his desire and readiness to prove the bona fides of his client, and also his wish, if possible, to get the matter before a jury. His client wished the case to be heard separately from the other. The Judge adiourned the case against Mr Campbell until this (Saturday) morning.
