KU KLUX KLAN
AMAZING GRIP IN OREGON. OUTRAGES BY NIGHT RIDERS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, December 11. (Received Dec. 12, at 11.5 p.m.) The New York World’s Washington correspondent interviewed Governor 01cott, of Oregon, en route to a conference of State Governors at White Sulphur Springs (West Virginia), before whom he intends to lay the subject of the Ku Klux Klan, which has gained an amazing, grip in Oregon. He expressed the conviction that if unchecked the Ku Klux Klan would inevitably lead to open religious and civil war throughout the country. Whole communities in Oregon were now tom with such religious dissension that neighbours who formerlv -were the best of friends were virtual feudists. _ A spirit of religious intolerance was seizing the churches, and was spreading to all branches of business. Outrages were being committed bv masked night riders. The judiciary, school system, politics, and newspapers were so influenced or controlled by the Ku Klux Klan that all former normal relationships and processes of law and order were completely undermined.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
