DANCE RECITAL

MISS NETTA KEATES’S PUPILS. The commodious Coronation Hall at St. Kilda was crowded to the doors on Saturday evening, when Miss Netta, Keates’s pupils gave a. highly successful dance recital, tho various items in which were cordially applauded by tho admiring spectators. The principal features,, of the entertainment were the “Forest Scene”—a series of dances representative of the dailv life' in (he woods of • tho fairy tales —and “’Hie Magic Fan,” the playlet in throe scenes which was presented by about 20 of the youthful dancers. Several other solo and ballot numbers were presented during the evening, and in each case the performance was greatly enhancedby the tasteful scenic and lighting effects provided. The work of the children throughout was accurate amt graceful, ami it afforded, many evidences of the successful instructional work carried out by Miss Keales in the course of her classes during

the year. During the interval Mr W. Jacobson presented the medals won for the highest marks as follows: —Under 16. Gladys Crossan and Irving APGregor (equal); under 12. Phyllis Christie.

Those who took part in the “P'orest Scene” wore Phyllis Christie (Herald of Dawn) ; Bcttcy Lawson (Squirrel); Thelma Rix (Butterfly) ; Irene Linklater (Fairy): V. Rix and I. APGregor (Bats); Peggy Black (Snirit of Summer): Moira. Whelan (Frog); Lilv A liken. G. Hall, V. Wilkinson. and H. Reid (Wattle Babies): Jovce Reid (Spider): Mearl M'Kague (Hunting Dance): Ada Philiins (Peacock, the Huntsman’s Victim); I. Murray. M. Wright, E. AlT.aren, F. Gordon, Leila Jeffs. N. Monaghan (Indians); Shirley' M'Clathv (Petals of Rose): Lois Slowly (Wood Soritel; N. Brown, U. Smith, and J. Francis (Grasshopnersl ; J. Reid. S. Lenz, N. Chisholm. and F. Gordon (Pixies); N. Miller and P. Garland (Rats). A Dutch dance opened the second port of the programme, and tin’s was followed by a toy ballet, entitled' “A Christmas Dream.” in which the following took part;—F. Black (Girl); L. Slowly (Poppv); I. Linkson (Fairy) ; T. Rix (Doll) : B. Lawson (Soldier); P. Christie (Rose); A. Horne (Kewpie); N. Whelan (Gollywoe); G. Ovnns (Father Christinas). An Egyptian scene, in which Gladys Crossan 'was the soloist, concluded this part of tho programme. The scene was divided into five sub-scenes as follows: Arabv. Dawn, Auitra’s Dance. Solo Dance, and Salam Song. The following were the characters in “The Magic Fun,” which constituted tho third part of the nerform,tmee: —The Red Magician, Gwen Hardman; Oiicon Rnella.
