ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
A DETERMINED SUICIDE. (Pwt Uwtt«t> P«*sa Aswan attoK.) ' WHANGAREI, October 16. Alexander Bell, aged 82 years, formerly a master mariner, an inmate of the Old People’s Home, was found dead under the bridge on the Otaika road yesterday afternoon, with his face blown away. Ho had improvised a gun, with which suicide was committed,' from a piece of lead piping charged with powder- and fired from a torichhole. A letter was found in the pocket of the deceased addressed to the police sergeant, in which he intimated his intention to take his life. Bell had suffered from an incurable disease for many years. GISBORNE, October 16. A man, named Wm. George Morgan, 66 years of ago, was found dead in bed .in a house where lie resided alone. Death had apparently occuri-ed two or three days previously. There are no suspicious circumstances. WAIPUKURAU, October 16. John Hirons, a farm labourer, was found dead in his whare at Hatuma on Saturday with a gash in the side of his right log and an open I ®razor beside him. _ At tha inquest on Sunday a verdict of suicide was returned. OAMARU. October 16. Allan Carmichael, aged 18 years, was killed at Hampden yesterday as the result of a collision between a motor cycle ridden by deceased and a motor car. SERIOUS SHOOTING ACCIDENT. ASHBURTON, October 16. A serious shooting accident occurred at Lismoro oh Sunday afternoon. John Percy Ashton, a single man, 21 veavs of age, was showing a seven-year-old lad (Geoffrey Sergent) how to hold a shotgun. The weapon was loaded, and when being lifted bv the boy into position it discharged, the sliot entering Ashton’s throat. His condition is very critical. The local police station received a telegram from Wellington last night stating (hat Errol Albert Peters had been ‘'accidentally drowned the previous day at the beach near Newcastle. New South Wales, and that the body had not been recovered. The deceased’s mother lives at Highgate, Roslyn
