Presiding on August 31 at the meeting of Furness, Withy, and Co., Ltd., Sir Frederick W. Lewis dealt at length with the general ■position in the shipping industry, and it was not a very encouraging picture that he drew of the situation. He was, however, not without hopo of a gradual improvement in conditions, and expressed his confidence in the continued prosperity of the company. The shipping situation at present he said, was no better than when tho shareholders met last year, with the exception that a good deal of progress had been made in reducing expenses. Freights usually were on an average only about one-fifth of what they were during 1920, which was simply tho reflection of tailing trade, and the result was that there were on July 1 laid np in home ports alone no fewer than about 532 vessels, of just over 1,000,000 tons net register, or 2,500,00 tons d.w. Thai was to say, 10 per cent, of tho British mercantile fleet was lying idle for lack of profitable employment. Part of that tonnago was probably obsolete, but. none the leas, it was obvious that there needed to be a very substantial revival in international trade before all that idle tonnago was absorbed.
