BOWLING.

1 By Jack. { Favoured w.itli llio best of weather and n good attendance, tho Valley Club's opening on Saturday was a distinct success, and ( the variety of blazers on tlio green ( was an indication of (he represent alive , nature of Hie gaihcrinjnr. In' mentioning < thai ihc club bad substituted various com- , petitions for (lie usual President, v. Vice- | president imatcli. the president (Mr .1. ] Rhodes) staled that after taking the legal advice of.one who was affectionately known I in bowling circles'.'as "Charlie," they had | decided to charge a. small enk-anee fee. Mr I Payne had expressed the opinion that our- ( side bowlers would be delighted to help t the club financially. Trophies would be i presented to the winners of the compeli- < fions, and, though of little intrinsic value, I Mr Rhodes was fenro that (he honour in ' winning, them would be appreciated, and i that they would be valued accordingly. The < competitions resulted as follow:—Drawing .' —Marshall (Kaikorai) and Taylor (North- J Fast Valley). Skittles - Isaacs (Caledonian). > Five-head- Rink Games (winning skins) — 1 Hnngeriord (Valley). ' I have not heard what the afternoon's takings amounted to. hut as there was a full ' green from start to finish the result 11111"* ' have been entirely satisfactory to the executive of the Valley Club. In croctinor a 1 big up-to-date pavilion the club has undertaken a fairly heavy expenditure, but the members of the various sister clubs were no douJ.it glad of the opportunity to assist in a small wav. Mr W. Jocobsen (nresirient, of the Dunedin Centre) and Mr J. S. Douglas (Mayor) congratulated the members of the chili on their enterprise in erecting a ;io\v pavilion and wished the club everv success. At the present juncture it will not be outof place to give n few details in regard to the alterations end improvements'which have been effected by the Valley Cbb since the close of last season. Howlers will recollect that the old entrance was rather inconvenient, but now there is a proper turnstile, and the old bodge on the left has , been completely cut out, while the ntacroearpa hedge has shared the same fate. By this, a big hollow was loft, bit this has been idled up with clay and top-dressed with soil right, up' to the front of the pavilion, and when well grassed and the flowers are in bloom. 1- should present a very pleasing spectacle. By the removal of the old pavilion to the north end of the tennis court a new breakwind bad to be erected, and it is of a substantial nature. Between it and the playing area ■ a new hedge has been planted for future shelter. In addition a great deal of reclamation work has been carried out on the west side of the new pavilion. A new wooden kerbing has been erected all round the playing area, and asphalt has replaced the grass in the ditch. By shifting the old building new lighting and drainage have had to be undertaken for the tennis club, and one of the courts has been completely too-dressed with new nspbalr, and the level ha's also been raised. Much of the credit for the alterations is clue to Messrs J. Rhodes (president) and -Mr Campbell and several other members also gave valuable assistance. , , The West Harbour Club also commencedoperations on Saturday afternoon, and the green, which was in capital condition, was full to capacity, renresentativos from the majority of the clubs in the centre being present: Mr W. Connor (president* cordially welcomed the visitors, and Messrs [J L\ Moller (Mayor of West Harbour) and \ M'Kenzie (representing the Dunedin Centre) expressed good wishes for a prosperous'and enjoyable season for the ciuli The following opening dates have been arranged by the various clubs: October 7: Civersham, Dunedin, Morn ington. and 'Roslyn. The matter of admilting lady members was discussed at a reeent° meeting of directors of the Caversham Club, and the proposal was very favourably received. A general meeting of members'will probably bo convened shortly after the club's opening date, when the matter will be finally decided by the members as a whole. The Kaikorai Club has decided to enlarge its pavilion to enable the present-small billiard table to be replaced by a full-sized one A considerable portion of the sum required to carry out the alterations has already been guaranteed. The new greenkcepcr of the Caversham Club (Mr Reid) has the green in excellent condition for the opening next Saturday. The Kaitangata Club's green was opened for the season on Saturday last in beautiiul weather and in the presence of a large muster of bowlers and their lady friends. The green played well, and the devotees of "kitty" thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon's roll-up. The Balclutha Clubs prospects for the season are very bright. The membership has already reached record figures, reachin., to within a- few of the century, so a boom season in bowling should bo experienced in South Otago. The club's- opening date has not yet, been definitely fixed. Like several of the Dunedin clubs, Mornington has appointed a new greenkeeper ! this season. Mr A. Smith, who has acted ' as caretaker for the past four years, has been succeeded by Mr J. Venebiles, wno is ; now busily omployed in getting the green 1 ready for the opening on Saturday ik-xt. 1 I understand "that- the members of the ' Caledonian Club will pay their annual visit ' to Kaitangata on Labour Day (October 23). Kdendale bowlers arc getting ready for ' the season, and expect to open on Wednes- ' day, October 11. The green is in good ' order, and Mr G. C. Stephen, contractor, is. ' proceeding with the erection of the pavilion, 1 which will be completed for the opening day. ' It is understood thai a movement, is on ' foot to establish an Fasten) District bowling 1 centre. A new bowling club has been j formed at Ileriot, and one is spoken of at Kelso. The idea is that bowling interests at ' Gore. Mataura, Kdendale. and Wyndham, i with'Clinton, Tananui, Ileriot, and felso. could form a workable centre. The matter ' is being freely discussed, and there is a " likelihood that some action will be taken ; during the season.
