Seating accommodation at the Overseas Club was overtaxed on Saturday niglit when the Returned Soldiers’ Association Savage Club brought its first season to a close. The first portion of the evening was taken up by the presentation of a twohours’ programme of first-class merit, much of the success of its presentation being duo to tlio bright and breezy personality of Chief Savage Lampen, who presided over tho gathering. After the National Anthem had been sung Bro. J. Calder installed tho Chief Savage on his throne. Tho members gave the tribal haJta, and tho visitors were welcomed with tho opening ode. . “Light Cavalry’’ overture by the orchestra under Bro. Hope inaugurated the programme, tba orchestra later rendering “Quarterdeck" March and "Rhinefels” Overture. Thea followed that delightful short comedy of J. M. Barrio's—‘‘Rosalind”—the character* being portrayed by Major Lampen, Miss Bessie Thompson, and Mrs A. Gardiner. The act was well staged and fully deserved the round of applause at its conclusion. Bro. Satterthwaile sang “Bonnv Mary of Argyle’’ in his usual finished stylo and was followed by Mr A. Young, who convulsed all present with his relation of the happenings at “A Jewish Wedding.” Mr J. I’laming contributed a humorous interlude on the tribulations which beset tho diner out in society, and Mr H. Smith further added to the merriment with an excellent, satire on certain military gentlemen “on tho staff.’ “The Aviator,”* by Bro, Borrow, and “The Lute Player,”' by Mr C. Mee, were pleasingly sung, and Mr Afmore’a rendering of “The Stoker” found* instant favour. A hom solo, “I Hear You Calling Me,” by Mr J. Himburg, completed tho individual items of the evening. The PvCturned soldiers’ Association choir under Mr Paget Gale, gave iwo most appropriate Terns* —“The Laughing Chorus” and “The Tickling Trio.” Community choruses also were introduced at appropriate intervals.
