THE PRESBYTERY AND WAR. TO THE EDITOa. Sin,—The Presbytery’s appointment of a committee to promote sub branches of the League of Nations Union reminds one of dst.riches sticking their heads in the sand when grave danger threatens. Instead of promoting League of Nations Unions it would be more sensible to promote unions of protection against air raids. Great Britain is now awaking to the dantror, and it is time New Zealand did likewise. Mr Lloyd George and other great men are continually warning us that a groat war is certain to come sooner or later. Lord Roberts gave us warning of the last groat war, but to cost we heeded not. Do' not let us bo unprepared this time, when so many great men are warning us so often. In “Passing Notes’’ reference was made recently to “The Prince of the Power of the Air.” I suppose this ap allusion to the Devil and his work in air raids. If we cannot afford guns for barrage against air raids let our engineers devise plans for safe shelters. Of course every sensible man wants to see peace among the nations, but human nature conuot alter itself. Wars will continue, therefore, until the advent of the Great Peacemaker, Who will command the nations to beat their swords into plougsluires and thoir bayonets into reaphooks, and learn war no more. When He trod this earth before Ho once said: “Think not that I came to send peace on the earth; I came not ta s r nd peace but the sword.” The sword is figurative of war, and until Ho comes Whoso right is it to inaugurate peace, there will be war, however, much as wo desire otherwise,—-I am, etc., August 2. Covont Garden receives over 1000 tons of cucumbers in a season When swallows nestle ’nca-th the caves And faintly stir the autumn leaves, There waft, to me as night-boats glide Sweet songs of love at eventide. Chill winds blow keen across the bay As twilight slowly wanes away, And that brings fear of colds, be sure. And thoughts of Woods’ Peppermint Cure. —Advt.
