EDUCATION BOARD

MEETING CONCLUDED. The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Beard was concluded yesterday. There were present—Messrs J, Wallace (chairman), J, Smith, R. H. Todd, G. Livingstone, J. H. Wilkinson, W. R. Brugfi, and the Hon. D. T. Fleming. RESIGNATIONS AND APPOINTMENTS. The following resignations were accepted: J. M. Nicolson, head master, Mornington; Alfred Mathews, head master, Kaitangata; Elizabeth W. Malloch, sole teacher, Maclennan; Adelene. M. Hare, sole teacher, Waronui; Jessie H. M'Lean, mistress, Otakou; Janet H. Wilkie, mistress, Pukeuri; Jessie Foster, mistress, Lowburn; Isabella. M. M'Konzie, assistant, Musselburgh; Edwin H. Howard, assistant, Balolutha District High; Catherine Clapperton, second assistant, Tokomairiro District High. Appointments were made as follows: Areta I. E. Roseveare, sole teacher, Waitaptka, vice D. T. M'Vie, resigned; R. M. Sullivan, sole teacher, Lauder Railway, vice M. MCorkindale, resigned; Marguerite Murphy, sole teacher, Waitahuna Gully, vice M. Sutherland, transferred;,Adelene M. Hare, assistant, Kensington, vice Hilda Hutt, resigned; Edwin W. Morrin, assistant, North-East Valley, vice P. J. Anderson, resigned; Mary Y. Wallace, assistant, N. Valley: Jessie Foster, mistress, Otakou, vice Jessie H. M'Lean, transferred; Jessie 11. M'Lean, mistress, Lowburn, vice Jessie Foster, transferred. GENERAL. The Otanomomo Committee forwarded an account for £22 Is for work done in connection with the teacher’s residence. —The architect stated that the agreement with the committee was that it should do the work if the board supplied the material.—lt was decided to repudiate the claim. The architect reported that he favoured forwarding an application to the department for the remodelling of the infant section of the Forbury School.—Held over. It was decided to carry out the remodelling of the Teaeraki infant room at a cost of £74. . ■ A protest from Mosgiel against the use of the gymnasium as a does room was referred to the committee. Tokomairiro applied for the subsidy on the cost of asphalting (£3B lls). —It was decided to inform the committee that the work having been carried out without, the board’s authority, the board accepted no liability. It was resolved, in reply to a communication from the New Zealand Education Boards’ Association, that the board does not favour a conference of boards to consider the questions of inspectors’ reports, junior high schools. and_ the engagement of teachers unless the Minister consents to the conference. The department intimated that, to _ provide for urgent works, it would contribute as a special grant in approved cases a subsidy of £ for £ on amounts allocated by the board to such works out of its building fund.—Pleasure was expressed at this advice, and it was decided to ask for a subsidy for the erection of the school at Purakauiti At the conclusion of the meeting the chairman stated" that, ns that would be the last occasion on which he' would occupy the chair (so he hoped) he would like to say a few words thanking the members for their support.
