SOCIETY OF ACCOUNTANTS

Tho annual social function of the Dunedin branch of tho New Zealand Society of Accountants was held on Wednesday evening in tho Savoy Lounge, Mr James Hogg (chairman) presiding over an attendance of about 60 members.

The Chairman stated that the prospects for members in commercial and industrial activities aid in public practice wore never brighter, and although tho profession, was the youngest it had had a phenomenal growth during the lost 10 years. Endeavours were being made to bring the University into closer touch with the business community of Dunedin, and .nobody could play a bigger part in doing this than the Accountants’ Society. Every year it was turning out fresh accountants who had been trained, by tho University and taken part in University activities, and who were now entering the business life of the city. The toast of the " New Zealand Society of Accountants” was proposed by Mr James Quailo, who paid a high tribute to those who had borne the heat and brunt of the day in tho formation of the society.— Mr J. U. Patterson, the only member of the council _ present, responded. A resolution expressing appreciation of Mr Walter Green’s services was then carried amidst applause. The toast of “ Commerce and Industries ” was proposed by Mr (1, M. Mac Loan, who stressed the importance of developing more fully the great asset that wo* have in Otago Central. This, fully developed, would spell prosperity for the city and its commerce and industries.—Mr W. C. Burt (president of tho Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association), who responded, said that the hydroelectric schemes of the Government would, when completed, give a big impetus to manufacturing. If tho people of New Zealand would ask for and use Now Zealandmade goods they would be doing a great deal towards the prosperity of their oivn country. Tho toast of “ The Otago University ” was proposed by Mr H. It. Spence, who traced the difference between education of 30 years ago to the splendid system of the University of Otago to-day.—Mr J. C. Stephens responded. The toast of “ Tho Commerce Faculty ” was proposed by Mi - P. B. Foote, and responded to by Mr S. Cameron (president Commerce Students’ Association). Songs were contributed by Messrs Algie, Hogg. M'Clclland, James Barrie, Williams, and other items by Messrs Robinson and Hendry.
