Tho monthly meeting of the executive of the St. John, Ambulance Association was held on Wednesday evening, _Mr C. Speight presiding. The business mainly related to the further improvement of the association’s public services. A sub-committee was sot up to coordinate and increase the firesont facilities in connection with ambuance men attending public gatherings to .render aid in oases of accident. The Hospital hostess repotted that her services wore largely utilised, and her work increasing weekly. It was decided that the ladies connected with the St. John Guild should assist the hostess in her many duties. So far the experiment, the first of the kind in tho dominion, has proved very successful, and highly appreciated by tho patients. Inquiries are being made as to the cost of an up-to-date ambulance, and although, thd association’s funds are at present insufficient to purchase the muchneeded machine, it is confidently expected that the money will be found' when required. The various monthly reports were read and adopted. As was to be expected at this season* both the nursing staff and the ambulance department are kept busily employed. During June the nurses paid 480 visits to patients, while the ambulances covered 693 miles, mostly in short runs, during tho same period The Excelsior Fair, in the North-East Valley Town Hall, was concluded on Wednesday night, when there was a good attendance A programme of music and song was rendered by tho North-East Valley Boys’ Band, solos by Miss Isabel Christie, Miss South; duet, Misses South; recitation, Mrs Raper; and Dickens’s character sketch (“Betsy Prig”), by Miss Styles and Mrs Murray. There was keen competition among tho baking classes, the following being the successful competitors:—Class 1, Mrs T. D. Jamieson; class 2, Miw Bennett; class 3, Miss Hayes; children’s baking, Miss G. Fowler 1, Mias Ethel Ogg 2. For most points in baking (prime ham), Mrs Jamieson and Mrs Bennet came equal with 16 points each.
