LUNACY REFORM
AGITATION IN AUSTRALIA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY', July 19. For mouths now a strong agitation has been proceeding for the reform of the lunacy laws. Following upon the Farr case, there were many who considered, quite independently of tbo individual facts revealed, that an abstract case for reform had been made out and that the authorisation of detention under the present system did not afford adequate protection Jo the subjects. Of course, it is recognised that the matter is most delicate and complex, consideration for tho feelings of both patient and relatives being not easily reconciled with the measures slighted for ensuring complete protection. However, the efforts of the Lunacy Reform League, mid the public feeling in the matter "have so far succeeded that Ministerial acknowledgment has been given of tic need for an entire remodelling of the laws in this matter. But before action is taken the authorities are wisely moving with great caution. The views of experts both hero and in other parts of tho world are to be fully gone into before an amending measure is brought down.
