Mr diaries Garland for a time refused to accept his share, declaring that riches spoiled life, and he retired with his wife and two children to an abandoned farm, where they lived a crude and simple life. After a time, however, he accepted his share of the fortune, and' he has now donated 1,000,000 dollars to the American fund for " public service, the money to be used to aid agencies which are so new or so experimental that they do not command general public support—A. and N.Z. Cable.
