HERIOT POULTRY AND PRODUCE CLUB

FIRST SHOW. The firet show held by the above club on Thursday last proved very successful, the entries in the various sections totalling 441. Th© ©how was well conducted, and the committee of management and moat capable secretary (Mr A. G. M'Kenzie) worked well together. The attendance was highly satisfactory, the door takings amounting to £ls 9s 6d; refreshment rooms (conducted by the ladies), £9 3s 6d; guessing competition, £ls Ds; and sale of produce, £7 6s 6d. There was a very fair display of poultry, comprising some nice birds. The white varieties lacked show finish in the matter of washing and preparation. Grain, vegetables, turnips, and dairy produce all had numerous entries, and the quality was excellent J throughout, the judges speaking very highly of the exhibits placed before them. The hall space proved inadequate to do justice to the display and accommodate the public, and an extension of the hall will be necessary for future shows. Many of the exhibitors came long distances, and fortunately the weather was dry, although oold. In the evening Mr Andrew M. Love (Green Island), who was associated with the judge in some of the poultry classes, gave an address to those, interested in poultry-raising. For the weight of a very prime wether donated by Mr J. F. Herbert, Mrs O’Driscoll and Messrs Alex. M'Kenzie and Chas. Thomson divided, all guessing the exact weight (10931 b), and Miss Minnie Todd guessed the correct weight (77i1bl of a live pig donated by Wilden Estate. The show was officially opened by the president (Mr R. F. Sim), who thanked the committee, judges, and ladies, and said they had reason to be justly proud of their first show, as the exhibits were as good as they would find in any Now Zealand exhibition of the kind. Some good special prizes were, given in the different sections, and the Horiot School won the shield presented by Mr Chas. Todd (Dunedin) for best school display of vegetables.
