GOLDEN WEDDINGS

On Saturday last Mr and Mrs Andrew Irwin, of Riooarton, Bast Taieri, celebrated their golden wedding. They were married at Heaham in 1872 and since coming to New, Zealand they lived for some years at Waiwera. It is interesting to note that the bridesmaid of 50 years ago was also present, and Mrs Mockay shared in the honours bestowed. The Rev. Charles J. Bush-King presided, and conveyed the congratulations of the people to Mr and Mrs Irwin. All the members of the family as well as 35 grandchildren were present. On Sunday morning Mr and Mrs Irwin attended St. Luke’s Church, and were received at the Church gate by the whole congregation. On behalf of whom Miss Birley presented the bridegroom with a buttonhole, and the vicar (the Rev. Bush-King) presented the bride with a bouquet of gold flowers and also a copy of the Prayer Book with hymns. The golden wedding of Mr and Mrs W. R. Overton, of Abbotsford, was celebrated on Sunday last. A large congregation met them at tha ohuron _ gates of St. Mark’s, Green Island, and Miss Mona Overton (a granddaughter) presented the bridegroom with a button-hole on behalf of the people. The vicar (lhe_ Rev._ O. J. BushKing) presented the bride with a bouquet of golden flowers and a copy of the Prayerbook with hymns. Mr_ and Mrs Overton were married at Bristol, in 1872. They have been in the dominion for about 55 years. Mr Overton was for several years schoolmaster at Mandeville, near Gore.

The opportunity was also taken to congratulate Mr and Mrs T. Tomkins on the occasion of their silver wedding. The Rev. C. J. Bush-King presented Mrs Tomkins with a bouquet of pink and white flowers, and also a copy of the Book of Common Prayer. Miss F. Tomkins presented her father with a button-hole on behalf of the church people.
