SPORTS, AWAKE!
In these worrying and strenuous days, it is certainly desirable that wholesome outdoor sport arid amusement- he encouraged. However, there seems to be a section of the public who wish to curtail the innocent pleasures of the people as a whole Their efforts are apparently often successful, a prominent instance being afforded by the banishment of bookmakers. However, the populace—which is always slow to move, but which takes a considerable amount of stopping once it has started —is at last realising that things are not just as they should be. A petition to have the Gaming Law revised, so that bookmakers be allowed to operate on racecourses again, is being circulated. in all patts of the dominion, and is mooting with very gratifying support. Ibis petition points out the great advantages of licensing bookmakers, chief among which ore the facilities offered to poorer people to enjoy the “sport of kings,” and the new fields of revenue opened to the Government. Only Iby united effort can success m routing the “kill-joys” bo achieved, and all sports are therefore naked to append their signatures to the petition, which can be soon and signed almost anywhere—act now.
