THE NAVY LEAGUE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—With reference to your London correspondent’s interesting account 6f ; the , annual meeting of the Grand Council of the League, held in London. on March ,10, it is possible to take, an unduly pessimistic’view of the position'.'from the information given. The very fact of the differences of opinion regarding policy expressed by the speakers, and the large attend'arice, go to prove that the league is yet % live body intention dsing itk influence in what it considers the best direction’towards keeping inviolate the safety of the Empire. ■' • - . ' Since the publication of your correspondent’s letter, a ’ cablegram has been received from our' l London office advising that'a new committee has been appointed/ and that the presidency has been offered to Lord, Islington. The,, message also states that the financial position is being looked into, and that it is hoped that .within the. next, few months everything will, bo placed.on a sound footing. The Washington Conference (strongly supported - by the league) marks, we hope, a step, forward in civilisation, but there is yet a long way to go before all tlie “grim grey ships,” which are the watcadogs •of our .far-flung Empire, may be scrapped with impunity.—l am, etc. D. H. Rogers, Secretary, the Navy League, Otago Branch. Dunedin, May 5.
