WEST HARBOUR BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr H. E. Moller) and Crs Fraser, Robertson, Smith, Robb, French, Harridge, and Mitchell. Before proceeding to the business, the council passed a resolution of condolence' with the relatives of the rate Mrs E. Montgomery and the Rev. Andrew Gray. The County Clerk, Waihemo, wrote asking the council to support the following Resolution:—“ That this council is of the opinion that the auditing of hospital boards’ accounts should be done by the Government Audit Department.”—-Received. It was decided to subscribe to thp “Board and Council ” periodical, Auckland, for 12 months. Accounts amounting to £177 8s 9d for the’ month of April were passed for payment the credit balance at May 1 being £ll3 19s Id. The Town Clerk, Port Chalmers, _ wrote thanking tho council for its motion of sympathy in the death of the late Mayor, Mr J. M‘D. Stevenson. . Cr Fraser, chairman’of the Finance Committee, presented a report on the financial position of the council. The Mayor thanked Mr Fraser for the lucid manner in which he had explained the report, which showel that the council was in a most satisfactory position. The council formerly paid 4 per cent, and 44 per cent, on the £14.000 loan, but it now paid 64 per fent. on the whole sum—an increase of £439 per annum. The total increase on the general rate of the borough amounts to twopence in the pound on the unimproved value. The Hospital levy last year was lid in the pound, but tins hud been reduced to 9d in the pound.
