NEW ZEALANDERS IN SYDNEY. Press Association— By Telem-apb— Copyright. SYDNEY, May 2. (Received May 2, at 10.10 p.m.) The lawn tennis championships were continued in fine, cool weather. The courts are showing signs of wear and tear,- and resemble chip rather than the turf courts to which ihe New Zealanders are accustomed. As a consequence the courts are fast in places and patchy, putting the New Zealanders in some instances off their game. Besides the singles and doubles events, several of the New Zealanders also paired with interstate partners in the Mixed Doubles. ■ In the Men’s Singles PoulWn (New South Wales) heat Aitken (New Zealand) G i 6—4, 6—2. In the Mixed Doubles Poulton and Mrs Docker beat Aitken and Miss Wellwood, 6 1 6—2. Aitken was unable to reproduce his true form in either the singles or doubles. Poulton smashed and served excellently, and was well supported by Mrs Docker. Miss Wellwood was unable to got voing pronerly with Aitken; Carr and Miss Cox beat Hartgell and Miss Brewster, 6—l, 6—3, with com- ' curative ease. S. H. Henderson and Mias Macfarlane beat Mellor and Miss Sinclair, 6—2, 6—3. Miss Macfarlane showed greatly imuroved form, driving beautifully and indulging in smashing successfully. Her backhand work and all-round plnv was first-class. In the Ladies’ Doubles Miss Curtis and Mrs Lascelles beat Mrs Cooling and Miss Meaney, 6—l. 6 —o, in a, one-sided game. Mrs Turner and Mrs Nicholson bent Misses Macfarlane and Pavton. 6—l, 7—5. The winners were the steadier players, and excelled in placing and all-round p’ay. Misses Wellwood and Smith b a at Mrs Creen and Miss Brewster, 7—5, 6—3. Miss Smith nosaes=es a neculiar underhand drive which bothered the losers. In a snecinl double match Hartgell and Mrs Green heat Rice and Miss Morris, 4—6, 9—7. G —4. Mrs Green excelled in smashing. throwing her full weight into the strokes. In the men’s special singles Aitken beat M’Cnusland, 6—l, B—6, displaying considcrsbb- improved form on the morning’s exhibition. In the Ladies’ Singles Championship Mrs Fuller bent Miss Payton, 3—6, 6—l, G—4. Miss Pnrton won the first set, hut played =hort subsequently being unable to strike her leu-rib. Mrs Puller need better judgment. placing judiciously, and her play was .steadier all round. - In the Ladies’ Singles Handicap Miss Taylor heat Mrs Hartgell, 6—l, 6—4., THE PREVALENCE OF GOITRE, TO THE EDITOR.
