AUSTRALIA’S PROGRESS
EARLY DAYS RECALLED. NOTHING TQ BE ASHAMED OF. Prasa Association—’By Tale graph—Copyright SYDNEY, May 1. (Received May 1, at 7.45 p.m.) Speaking at the anniversary of the landing of Captain Cook, Chief Justice Cullen, referring to Australia’s progress, said; “We can look the whole world in the face and owe no compliment to anybody, high or low, who thinks Australia has anything to be ashamed of.” He said ho mentioned this because the suggestion had been made that Australia "should try to forget her early days, because the first people who went there went involuntarily. He pointed out that it was not the worst of Great Britain’s criminals who were sent to Australia —only the best of the offenders were sent to. give them a chance to make good in a new land. Some of the best of the population got a new start under this system, and he appealed to his hearers to .put those foolish jabberers in their places who said that Australia had to be perpetually reminded that in the first fleet were some who would rather have remained behind.
