SOUTH CANTERBURY RACES.

SONGBIRD WINS THE AUTUMN

(From Our Own Rri’Oim;it.) TTMARU, April 29,

The concluding day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting opened in drizzling rain, which, however, cleared off, 'hut tile final pari of the afternoon was somewhat cold. The attendance was rather better than on (he previous day. The track again provided* hard going. Soind* excellent racing took place, fend the card supplied several close finishes. Quarrelsomo was backed down to a short price in the 'Trial Handicap, and won with-something in hand. Backers went strongly for Bon. JSpec and Rod Hind in the Parcora Handicap. hut both were well beaten by Mantua land Limelight. Mantua could ’not puce .with them over the first three furlongs, hut she finished well and 'held Limelight Ji.y a neck, after the latter covered a good deal of ground through coming round on the outside of the field. Bon Spec was stopping over the last furlong, just as ho idrew out and looked like being a winner. Red Hind did not shape up to expectations, and the hot pace set in the .early stages settled both her and Bon, Spec. ; A close finish took place in the Beaconsificld Welter, and many thought that Raconteur got second, hut the angle at the' jTimaru course is apt to be very deceiving, land anyone outside the judge’s box is not in a position to question the judge in a dose finish. Mr Aldworth, by the way, arrived in time to act on the second day. Songbird at one time shoWed a very short iprico when fretting was in progress on the lAiitfmin Handicap, but towards the close of ‘operations’ good support came for Tatau Tatau and Foo Chow. Tatau Tatau led into the straight and ’stayed on, fairly well, hut Songbird, under pressure all the way, •wore her down and won by a length. The pace was a bit too hot for Foo Cnow, but both Mythology and Twinkle shaped fairly 'well. The latter was making up ground itowards the finish.

! Two well-backed chances in Juan amt flalma tipped out in the Steeplechase, and T. O'Connor, the rider, of the former, appeared to get a bad fall, but he escaped, with a, severe shaking. Lord Leslie, thanks to being vigorously bandied by Ennnerson, just won the Tcnmka Handicap, in which Vico Royal was unlucky, as he lost three or four lengths through interference, and was finally beaten hy only half a length after making up his lost ground. Deucalion was a hot pot for th© concluding event on the card, but good support. also came for Whipping Boy and Lady [Blissful. Whipping Boy won well, but a ■better pilot on Maznnm could have found him, much more dangerous at the finish. ■ Mr P. S. M’Nab again did good work at the barrier. Ho had to contend against the tendency of riders to break away at the rise of the flag signalling that the totalisator was balanced, after they had stood quietly on the markup to that■ stage o! the proceedings. During the day £20.557 jwent through the totalisator, • making £37,544 10s for the meeting, or £7407 less than last year.
