RUGBY. , Seldom has the opening of a football season been looked forward to with greater interest than the present one which will open this afternoon. All the senior clubs are reported to bo stronger than last season, and especially in the back division, so it is anticipated that this season there will be a decided improvement in back play, and that the clubs will give the public exhibitions of bright, open play. At Carisbrook this afternoon University A will meet Zin-gari-Richmond. The students have a very formidable set of backs, and, if they get going, should take a lot of stopping. The forwards are also strong. Zingari-Rioh-mond has also secured several new backs, and as the forwards appear to be stronger than they were last season the team should offer strong ooposition to the Light Blues. At the Caledonian Ground Alhambra will .meet Pirates. Alhambra is another team which has obtained some new backs, while the forwards should prove to be a formid able pack. Pirates, while perhaps slight!' on the light side, should show a good dea' of' pace, and confidentlv expect to extend the best of the other teams. At Tahuna Park Kaikorai will meet Pov* Chalmers. Kaikorai is again strong, and Port is stronger than last season. On the North Ground Southeni will men 1 Union. The Black and Whites expect their back division to he much stronger than last season, while the forwards can be relied upon. It is honed that Union wil’ come into its own as the season progresses ASSOCIATION. The Soccer season will be ,opened at Culling Park to-day, when Mornington wil 1 meet Mount Zion at 1.30 p.m., and Northern will play Maori Hill at 3 p.m. All these teams played good football last season, and as each one claims to be stronger than eve this season, some interesting games should be witnessed.
