OBITUARY

MR D. D. SEATON. In the passing of Mr D. D. Seaton, of • Portobello, on Sunday last, the district suffers the loss of one who, from youth to manhood, in the everyday life of the community in which he was born and educated, had endeared himself to both old and young. Of a genial disposition, his kindly face and active figure will be sadly missed by those who were privileged to dome in contact with him during the daily round. His attachment to the children of the district, their great regard for him and pleasure of his company, were certain indications in the character of a man from whom sympathy and kindliness radiated. Mr Seaton was born in Portobello 62 vears ago. was educated at the Portobello School, and, except for a few years'spent in Auckland, lived all his life in the district. He was Ihe son of the late James Seaton, who arrived in the Philip Laing. and who was a member of the Provincial Council. -■ For many years ho was coach proprietor and driver, and at one time owned the ferry boat Onslow. He was also for many years a member of the Portobello Road Board, and was chairman of the School Committee. He was a keen volunteer in the early days. He did good work as an active member of the Peninsula A. and P. Society. He was for 30 years a member of the Peninsula Kilwinning No. 696 Masonic Lodge, and was twice through the Master’s chair and the Chaplain’s chair, and at the lime of his death was Master of Ceremonies. He was also an officer of the Grand Lodge. For, a number of years he was a. member of the Oddfellows’ Lodge, and will always be remembered for the keen enthusiasm with which he entered info its activities. He was from his youth keenly interested in all sports, and has for many years been a member of the Fovbury Trotting Club. In late years he has interested himself mainlv in racing as a pastime. and has owned several well-known trotting horses. His funeral last Tuesday was one of the largest which ever took place in PortoMlo. It is estimated that from 800 to 1000 were present, practically all parts of the province being represented. Deceased was interred with full Masonic rites. He was twice married, and leaves a widow, two sons,. and two daughters.
