ANZAC DAY
CELEBRATION AT NASBBY. The event of the past week in Naseby was tlie celebration of Anzac Day and the unveiling of the fallen soldiers’ monument. Tho weather . was cold and threatened rain but. fortunately none fell. A very large crowd arrived during tho afternoon t.o witness the ceremony, the whole district being well represented. Tho ceremony opened with a march of returned soldiers and veterans down the street to the site of tho monument; to the accompaniment of a suitable tune by the band, which led the procession. It was under tlie command of Captain R. J. E. Smith and Lieutenant Law, two Maniotolo officers who took part in the war. Tho veterans and returned soldiers on parade were: — James Crawford (Crimea); Lieutenant Alex. M'Leiman, Lieutenant F. W. Butler, Privates IT. Dowlo and P. W. Newman (South Africa). Some of tho men wore the Gallinoli Victory, and Allies medals. The gathering was addressed bv tho Mayor (Mr Fraser), the Rev. A. S. Moffatt, Captain Smith, and the Hon R. Scott. The Rev. A. Kirkland conducted the devotional exercises. The inscription on the monument reads; “Erected by tlie resident? of Naseby District in memory of those who made the Supremo Sacrifice in the Great War 19141918.” -The name* are: Beattie J.
