APRIL FOOL'S DAY
The title given to the first day of April represents .-i custom which has prevailed in some countries for many centuries, and in the British isles for several centuries at lead. The reasons for the change ore many and various, one of the most interesting being that, on the beginning of the year being changed from April 1 to January 1. those who continued to celebrate the former were fit subject? for practical jokes, such as the receipt of bogus presents. In France they refer to a “poisson d' avril." suggesting thai an April fish is young and so is easily caught. In Scotland it was called ‘‘hunting the gowk" -i.e., the cnekno. The period of April-foolmg ends at noon, so the public are faithfully assured of a good show on Saturday afternoon at the ’Varsity athletic sports. Caledonian Ground.
